How to Change Aspect Ratio in DaVinci Resolve

In DaVinci Resolve, it’s easy to modify the aspect ratio adjusting the timeline resolution and scaling settings.

How to Change Aspect Ratio in DaVinci Resolve

What is Aspect Ratio?

Aspect ratio is the ratio of width to height of a video frame.

Typical aspect ratios:

  • 16:9 -> Standard landscape videos, TV, YouTube videos
  • 9:16 → Instagram Reels, TikTok, YouTube Shorts
  • 1:1 -> Instagram square post
  • 2.39:1 => Widescreen cinematic look

The aspect ratio you choose depends on where you intend to post your video.

Step 1. Open Project Settings

  • Open DaVinci Resolve
  • Open up your project
  • Click on the ⚙️ icon. bottom-right corner Project Settings icon

Project Settings provides all critical variables including timeline resolution, frame rate and scaling.

Step 2: Change the Timeline Resolution

Navigate to:

Project Settings → General Settings

Choose the option:

Timeline Resolution

Now modify the width and height as per your need.

Resolution: 1920 x 1080

Aspect Ration: 16:9

Step 3: Adjust Video Framing

After changing the aspect ratio, your footage may not fit correctly

To adjust:

  1. Go to the Edit Page
  2. Select your video clip
  3. Open the Inspector
  4. Adjust:
  5. Zoom
  6. Position X
  7. Position Y
  8. Rotation

This helps you place your subject correctly inside the new frame.

Step 4: Adjust Image Scaling Settings

Go to:

Project Settings → Image Scaling

You will see different scaling options.

Scale Entire Image to Fit

  • Shows the complete video
  • May create black bars

Scale Full Frame with Crop

  • Fills the entire screen
  • Crops some parts of the video

For social media videos, Scale Full Frame with Crop is commonly used.

How to Add a Cinematic Aspect Ratio in DaVinci Resolve?

For a cinematic movie style look use:

1920×804

or

4096×1716

Like movies this gives wide screen movie vibe.

You may also produce a cinematic style with black bars (letter box effect).
